Early Bob Weir

Bob Weir - 1971
Demos for Ace LP

These are solo acoustic references made with lyricist John Barlow, recorded at Bob's Marin home during Fall of 1971. Sourced from pre-FM production CD made by David Gans for one of his KPFA Dead Marathon pledge drives a few years ago. Some of Weir's most beloved songs in their embryonic stage.

Revolution Void

The album Increase the Dosage features guest performances by musicians such as Seamus Blake (the Mingus Big Band), Michael Shrieve (Santana) and Matthew Garrison (Herbie Hancock). The album was released initially on 4/4/2004 but the short-run self-released pressing quickly sold out. It was released again on 9/25/05 in a web package with full album art.

The web package is a self-contained website with hyperlinks directly from the tracklist to MP3 sound files. It features 4 pages of full-color artwork by Seattle artist Shawn Wolfe. (view web package)

Excerpt from All Music Guide review by Matt Borghi:

The Revolution Void recording is excellent and shows quite a gifted blend of sounds that defy genre specification, coming together and becoming quite cohesive. This is a very eclectic recording and one that certainly rewards the listener with a palette for new and intriguing sound. This is a great disc, and one that listeners should definitely look into.

4/5 stars.

Jorma Kaukonen turns 70!

Celebrates on stage with Hot Tuna & friends in NYC

Hot Tuna has decided to throw the ultimate party for Jorma’s 70th birthday, one that will mark over 50 years of performing for the renowned guitarist.

On Dec. 3 and 4, 2010, Jorma will take the stage with his celebrated band Hot Tuna for an electric show at the Beacon Theatre to kick-start the celebration. Throughout the night, fans should prepare to be astounded, as a star-studded line up of musicians and friends of Jorma’s have committed to helping him commemorate the evening. In a career that has spanned over half a century, Jorma has played and collaborated with the best musicians around. For the 70th birthday celebration, these performers will join him on stage to help embrace the occasion, their camaraderie, and most importantly the music.

Joining Jorma first and foremost will be Jack Casady. His friend and musical partner since the fifties, Jack joined Jorma in California when the two of them helped launched the legendary band Jefferson Airplane. From here they branched off and founded Hot Tuna who’s longevity and popularity has astounded even them. This union has spanned over 50 years, making Jorma and Jack two of rock’s longest standing duos.

Teaming up with Jorma and Jack will be their electric band mates. Currently touring with Hot Tuna Electric is mandolinist Barry Mitterhoff. A friend since his work on Jorma’s 2002 Grammy nominated CD, Blue Country Heart, Barry’s musical contributions to Hot Tuna add an element all their own. His career highlights are unmatched; he’s performed at the White House, and his work can be heard many movie soundtracks.

Hot Tuna is also thrilled to be playing with special guest drummer Skoota Warner. Known as “The Funky Drummer,” Skoota has performed with the likes of Santana, Matisyahu, Mary J. Blige, Cindy Lauper and Lionel Ritchie. He is tagged as one of the best Soul, Rock, Gospel & Pop drummers around and is a fresh addition to guys’ electric lineup.

Finally, Hot Tuna is ecstatic to play with this A list guest directory. Without naming names, because quite frankly they’d like to leave that a surprise, fans would be foolish not to take in one or both of these shows. The guest appearances are quite different for each night but all Jack and Jorma are willing to say is that the music will cover their early years to present with musicians from the folk, blues, songwriter, psychedelic, southern rock and contemporary world of music.

These guys are veterans of their craft. They continue to play not only because they have the ability, but also the drive to push themselves as musicians and the desire to play under any and every circumstance. It is this notion that makes this collaboration, especially on a milestone birthday like Jorma’s 70th, a truly epic event and one you won’t want to miss.

Marillion - Tales from the Engine Room

Tales From The Engine Room is a remix of This Strange Engine with a few exceptions and one extra addition. It was conducted by Marc Mitchell and Mark Daghorn of Positive Light. Both Marillion fans, they approached the band with this remix of the previous record. The remix album was still in the rough stages, but they asked the band for permission to complete and release it. The band were delighted at what they heard and gladly gave them the green light to complete the project.

A single was released prior to the release for the club scene, Memory of Water.

It was released on Eagle Records.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I recently bought this one - without noticing that it was a remix album. I paid something 2 or 3 euros. Cheap? No, it aint cheap, its worthless album. It gives no pleasure to Marillion fan like me. Its mainly boring....Mr. Daghorn and Mr. Mitchell may be famous but I dont understand this kind of remixing.

Track listing

1. "Estonia" - 11:43
2. "Memory Of Water" - 9:36
3. "This Strange Engine" - 20:37
4. "One Fine Day" - 8:20
5. "Face 1004" - 8:40
6. "80 Days" - 8:46

Mamba, DBTL 2010

Most of the musicians that recorded and performed with Miles Davis during his early explorations into electric instrumentation went on to form bands of their own. Of these groups intent on further exploring the new ground that Miles was forging into, few were as adept or as influential as the Mahavishnu Orchestra, a globally diverse group formed by legendary English guitarist John McLaughlin.

Bay Area composers

Charles Amirkhanian hosts a program featuring the music of three Bay Area composers, two of which join him in the studio to discuss their works. Maggi Payne and Bob Gonsalves are both graduates of the Master’s Degree program at Mills College in Electronic and Recorded Media from the Center for Contemporary Music. Payne, who could not make it to the KPFA studios due to illness, was at the time of this recording, director of the recording studio at the Center, and was serving as an engineer for recording sessions which were available to the public for a nominal charge.

Her expertise in the studio is highlighted with a selection of pristine tape pieces that Amirkhanian plays in her absence. Herb Bielawa was director of the electronic music studio at San Francisco State University as well as the founder of the Pro Musica Nova ensemble. The participants discuss their interests in the electronic music field and introduce their own compositions.

She Never Will Marry

“She Never Will Marry” is an adaptation of some very old ballads.

THE LOVER’S LAMENT FOR HER SAILOR

As I was walking along the seashore,

Where the breeze it blew cool, and the billows did round,

Where the wind and the waves and the waters run

I heard a shrill voice make a sorrowful sound.

Chorus:

Crying, O my love’s gone, whom I do adore,

He’s gone and I will never see him more.

I tarried awhile still listening near,

And heard her complain for the loss of her dear;

Which grieved me sadly to hear her complain

Crying, he is gone and I will never see him again.

She appeared like some goddess, and dressed like a queen,

She’s the fairest of creatures that ever was seen.

I told her I’d marry her myself, if she pleas’d,

But the answer she made me, was my love is in the seas.

I never will marry nor be any man’s bride,

I choose to live single, all the days of my life,

For the loss of my sailor I deeply deplore,

As he’s lost in the seas I shall ne’er see him more.

I will go down to my dearest that lies in the deep

And with kind embraces I will him intreat,

I will kiss his cold lips like the coral so red,

I will close up his eyes that have been so long dead.

The shells of the oysters shall be my lover’s bed,

And the shrimps of the sea shall swim over his head,

Then she plunged her fair body right into the deep,

And closed her fair eyes in the water to sleep.

Lyrics:

[G] They say that [D] love’s a [G] gentle thing

But it’s [C] only [D] brought her [G] pain

For the [C] only [D] man she [G] ever [Em] loved

Has [Am] gone on the [D] midnight [G] train

She never will [D] marry

She’ll be no man’s [C] wife

She expect to live [G] single

All the [D] days of her [G] life

Well the train pulled out

The whistle blew

With a long and a lonesome moan

He’s gone he’s gone

Like the morning dew

And left her all alone

She never will marry

She’ll be no man’s wife

She expect to live single

All the days of her life

Well there’s many a change in the winter wind

And a change in the clouds and Byrds

There’s many a change in a young man’s heart

But never a change in hers

She never will marry

She’ll be no man’s wife

She expect to live single

All the days of her life

BETTYE LaVETTE - Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook

Bettye LaVette brings the British Invasion home to its American R&B roots on Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook. Produced by Bettye, Rob Mathes and Michael Stevens, the album is a 13 song journey through compositions by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd among others, concluding right where the very idea for Interpretations started: Bettye s visceral rendition of The Who s Love Reign O er Me from the 2008 Kennedy Center Honors, which appears here as a bonus track. That performance which first brought Bettye together with Stevens (the event s producer) and Mathes (its musical director) showcased for a national television audience what her devoted fanbase already knew: Bettye LaVette is without parallel as an interpreter of popular song. The success of this performance lead to another astonishing moment on the national stage, her duet of Sam Cooke s Change Is Gonna Come with Jon Bon Jovi at the Obama Inaugural Concert.

Now comes Bettye LaVette s first release since those extraordinary performances. Finding new excited fans at her shows, Bettye decided to explore more of the repertoire that had brought her all this attention. From the wistful naiveté of The Moody Blues Nights in White Satin, which Bettye matures into a deep and unshakeable lament, to the funky workout of Ringo Starr s It Don t Come Easy, Bettye inhabits these songs, revitalizes them and exposes the humanity that makes these 13 tracks not just pop songs, but enduring works of art. - amazon.com

Roky Erickson returns with True Love Cast Out All Evil

Legendary musician Roky Erickson triumphantly returns with "True Love Cast Out All Evil", his first new album in fourteen years. It consists of largely unreleased and unknown songs that Erickson wrote throughout his decades-long career – while with the Elevators, while in prison at Rusk, during the horror-rock days and in the midst of the long decline. In these songs, Roky hangs up the zombie and atom-brain metaphors to speak with heart-breaking candor about his real life story, about shock treatment, imprisonment, mental illness, and irreversible loss. And, with the wisdom that can only be marshaled by someone who has been through all of the above personally, Erickson also tells us about love, hope, and spiritual grace.

Toisekseen albumeilla tuppasi olemaan A- ja B-puoli. Niiden vertailu kertoi, oliko kyseessä hätäisesti koottu hittilevy vai tasapainoisesti koottu teos.

Ainoa ongelma vinyyleissä on niiden tarvitsema tila. Oma 800 tai 900 albumin kokoelma täyttää työhuoneen nurkassa melkoisen hyllyn.....

Iron Sky trailer

This is a trailer for the upcoming sci-fi comedy from Energia, the people who gave the world Star Wreck: In The Pirkinning. This will be a much larger production involving a cast of professional actors, with dialogue in English and a script by established writer Johanna Sinisalo. Sinisalo is a winner of Finland's highest literary award, the Finlandia Prize, for her novel "Not Before Sundown" (published in the US as "Troll - A Love Story").

The basic idea behind Iron Sky is simple: In 1945 Nazis fled to the Moon from their secret base in Antarctica using a fleet of flying saucers. In 2018 they are coming back to take over the Earth.

Despite its much, much higher budget with Iron Sky, Energia is still making films as a co-operative effort and you can participate in Iron Sky's production through Energia's Wreckamovie website.
